China Opposes Arms Sales of France Weapons To Taiwan
China warned France on Wednesday not to “harm Sino-French relations” by selling arms to neighbouring Taiwan, which is planning to buy weapons as part of an upgrade to a French-made warship fleet bought 30 years ago.
China says that Taiwan is part of “one China” and that this principle must be accepted by any country with which it has diplomatic relations. Arms sales to Taiwan are always highly sensitive and regularly prompt a strong reaction from Beijing.
Taiwan is mostly equipped with US-made weapons, but in 1991 France sold Taiwan six Lafayette frigates, to China’s anger. France also sold Taiwan 60 Mirage fighter jets in 1992.
Since then, China has vastly expanded its economic and military capabilities, and has grown more assertive in its efforts to thwart such sales.
Taiwan last month said it was seeking to buy equipment from France to upgrade the ships’ missile interference system.
Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said China resolutely opposed any arms sales to Taiwan.
“We have already expressed our serious concern to France,” he told a daily news briefing.
We again urge the French side to abide by the one China principle and withdraw the arms sale plan to Taiwan to avoid harming Sino-French relations,” the spokesman added.
France has rejected Chinese criticism of the planned weapons deal with Taiwan, saying everyone’s focus at this time should be on fighting the coronavirus epidemic.
France strictly respects the contractual agreements that it formed with Taiwan and nothing has changed in its position since 1994,” the French foreign ministry said in a statement on Wednesday, referring to a 1994 agreement re-establishing ties with Beijing.
“Faced with the Covid-19 crisis, all our attention and all our efforts should be focused on the fight against the pandemic,” the ministry added.
Taiwan says it needs to upgrade its armed forces to deal with the growing threat from China, which has in recent months stepped up its military drills near the democratic, self-governing island.
China describes Taiwan as its most sensitive and important territorial issue, and has never renounced the use of force to bring the island under its control. Taiwan has shown no interest in being ruled by autocratic China.

WUHAN Wholesale Market Played A Role In Outbreak Of Coronavirus - WHO
The World Health Organisation, WHO, has revealed that the wholesale market in the central Chinese city of Wuhan played a role in the outbreak of the coronavirus in December, 2019.
Dr. Peter Ben Embarek, a WHO expert on food safety and zoonotic viruses speaking at a Geneva news briefing said that investigations are ongoing to know the exact role played Wuhan played in the outbreak of COVID-19.
“Chinese government closed the Wuhan market in January as part of efforts to curb the spread of the virus and ordered a temporary ban on trade and consumption of wildlife.
The market played a role in the event, that’s clear.
“But what role we don’t know, whether it was the source or amplifying setting or just a coincidence that some cases were detected in and around that market.”
He, however said it is unclear whether live animals or infected vendors or shoppers brought the virus into the market.
Reports shows that U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, said there was enormous evidence to show that COVID-19 came from the Wuhan laboratory.
However, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Hua Chunying, debunked the claims that that the coronavirus originated in a lab in Wuhan.

Coronavirus Pandemic Originated From A Laboratory in Wuhan, China - US Sec. Of State
US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo has said that there is ‘enormous evidence’ that the Coronavirus pandemic originated in a laboratory in Wuhan, China.
He made the claims during his appearance on ABC’s This Week on Sunday
Pompeo said: ‘There’s enormous evidence that that’s where this began. We’ve said from the beginning that this was a virus that originated in Wuhan, China,’ Pompeo said on
‘We took a lot of grief for that from the outset. But I think the whole world can see now. Remember, China has a history of infecting the world, and they have a history of running substandard laboratories,’ he added.
‘These are not the first times that we’ve had a world exposed to viruses as a result of failures in a Chinese lab,’ Pompeo said.
Pompeo, a former director of the Central Intelligence Agency, went on to say that he agrees with a statement from the US intelligence community in which it concurred ‘with the wide scientific consensus that the COVID-19 virus was not man-made or genetically modified’.
He said early Chinese efforts to downplay the coronavirus amounted to ‘a classic Communist disinformation effort that created enormous risk’.
‘China behaved like authoritarian regimes do, attempted to conceal and hide and confuse. It employed the World Health Organization as a tool to do the same.’
This is an ongoing threat, an ongoing pandemic,’ Pompeo said. ‘The Chinese Communist Party continues to block access to the Western world, the world’s best scientists, to figure out exactly what happened.’
Experts believe coronavirus started spreading as early as February in the United States before lockdown directives were issued for millions of Americans in mid-March.
President Donald Trump has been increasingly critical of China’s role in the pandemic, which has infected nearly 3.5 million people and killed more than 240,000 around the world.
China has been accused of trying to cover up the extent of the virus when it first came to light and preventing other countries around the world from being prepared.
Trump reportedly tasked US spies to find out more about the origins of the virus, which was first linked to a Wuhan market where exotic animals like bats were being sold and now to a virus research laboratory nearby.
Last week, Trump claimed that he had seen evidence that coronavirus started in the Wuhan virology laboratory and warned he could impose tariffs of $1trillion on China in retribution for the pandemic.
‘Yes I have. Yes I have,’ Trump said when asked if he had seen proof the virus originated in the Wuhan Institute of Technology.
There are more than 1.1 million confirmed coronavirus cases in the US with at least 67,000 deaths.

(See Photos) China Hospital Where Coronavirus Patients Were Treated By Robots
The idea of humanoid robots taking jobs previously done by humans may feel dystopian, but in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic, robots can free up human hospital medical staff and limit the possibility virus spread.
That’s precisely why Beijing-based robotics company CloudMinds sent 14 robots to Wuhan, China to help with patient care amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The robots, some of which are more humanoid than others, can clean and disinfect, deliver medicine to patients and measure patients’ temperature. CloudMinds donated robots to several medical facilities in China, including the Wuhan Wuchang Smart Field Hospital, which was converted from the Hong Shan Sports Center.

For a time in March, “a previously human-run field hospital located inside Hong Shan Sports Center located in Wuhan was converted … into a robot-led field hospital staffed entirely by robots and other smart [Internet of Things] devices,” CloudMinds CEO and founder Bill Huang tells CNBC Make It, in a statement.
The robots cost between $17,000 and $72,000 each, a spokesperson for CloudMinds U.S., tells CNBC Make It.

Take a look.

CloudMinds’ humanoid service robot, Ginger, helped with hospital admissions, education services and, as can be seen in the video below, in providing a bit of levity. In addition to its administrative responsibilities, Ginger, “helped lift the spirits of bored quarantine patients by entertaining them with dancing,” Bill Huang said.
The delivery robot below has an autonomous navigation and obstacle avoidance system. It can be used to deliver food, drinks and medicine to patients without direct person-to-person contact.
The robots worked with an artificial intelligence information management platform.

Called HARIX (Human Augmented Robot Intelligence with eXtreme Reality), “this AI platform, synced with smart bracelets and rings worn by patients, was able to monitor patient vital signs (including temperature, heart rate, blood oxygen levels), allowing doctors and nurses outside the facility to monitor all patient vital information remotely on one interface,” Bill Huang tells CNBC Make It.
“Doctors and nurses were also equipped with these smart devices to monitor their own vitals to catch any potential early symptoms of infection,” he says.
Operations in field hospitals like Wuhan Wuchang Smart Field Hospital have now been put on hold.
“These temporary field hospitals were used primarily to treat new incoming cases with light symptoms, with severe cases being transferred to hospitals,” a CloudMinds spokesperson tells CNBC Make It. “As the containment efforts have improved, and the number of new cases has decreased, hospitals are now able to accommodate all new incoming cases.”

72 Nigerians Tested Positive For Coronavirus In Guangzhou – China Writes FG
An official diplomatic document has emerged showing that the Chinese Government detailed how 72 Nigerians tested positive for COVID-19 in Guangzhou, China.
The document, REF. No. SWZ[2020] 0128, dated April 22, 2020 by the Foreign Affairs Office, Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government, outlined the profile of the cases and advised Nigerians resident in China to comply with the law of their hosts in controlling the pandemic.
The PUNCH had published a story on Thursday, April 23, 2020, ‘Evacuation: 72 Nigerians, 111 other Africans in China test positive’, which some Nigerians have mounted a strident campaign against, claiming that the story was false.
Some Nigerians, especially those who claimed to be resident in China, had accused The PUNCH of propaganda and spreading falsehood, saying no Nigerian had tested positive for the virus in China.
The official communication between the two countries has, however, validated The PUNCH story that the Chinese Government actually wrote its Nigerian counterpart, informing the Federal Government of its staggering findings among Africans in Guangzhou.
The document, which was written to the Consulate General of Nigeria in Guangzhou, read in part, “The Foreign Affairs Office of Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government presents its compliments to the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Guangzhou and has the honour to summarise the current situation of Nigeria citizens in Guangzhou concerning the COVID-19 pandemic:
“According to the data reported on 21st April, 2020 by the Guangzhou Municipal Health Commission, among Nigerian citizens in Guangzhou, there are 16 confirmed cases, 56 cases have been tested positive and 65 cases of close contact.”
The letter added, “We hereby kindly request the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Guangzhou to urge Nigerian citizens in China to comply with the Law of the People’s Republic of China on the Prevention and Treatment of Infections Diseases, Law of Frontier Health and Quarantine of the People’s Republic of China, Public Health Emergency Regulations, etc.,support and cooperate with the Guangzhou Municipal People’s Government for any work related to the prevention and control of COVID-19.
“Also, remind them to carry out self-protection, reduce outdoor activities, avoid going to crowded areas; do not organise or participate in mass gathering.

Germany sends £130bn bill to China as Coronavirus Damage
Germany has rattled China after joining the United Kingdom, France, and the United States in a rare attack after Berlin called out Beijing’s responsibility for the global pandemic and even issued a £130bn invoice.
The country has sparked outrage in China after a major newspaper put together a £130bn invoice that Beijing “owes” Berlin following the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
Germany has followed France, the UK and the US in directing its coronavirus anger at China, where the virus originated. Recent attacks come amid findings that Beijing appeared to cover up the true scale of the crisis, as the source of the outbreak remains a mystery.
On Saturday, Donald Trump warned that China should face consequences if it was “knowingly responsible” for unleashing the coronavirus pandemic.
President Trump told reporters: “It could have been stopped in China before it started and it wasn’t, and the whole world is suffering because of it.
“If it was a mistake, a mistake is a mistake. But if they were knowingly responsible, then there should be consequences.
He said the Chinese were “embarrassed” and the question was whether what happened with the coronavirus was “a mistake that got out of control, or was it done deliberately?”
President Trump and his senior aides have repeatedly accused China of lacking transparency.
This week the city of Wuhan, where the outbreak started, revised its number of fatalities by a sudden 50% jump in the figure.
The UK has joined US intelligence officials in investigating claims that the virus originated in a Wuhan virus lab and not a wet market.
According to Express, a bombshell op-ed this week in Germany’s largest tabloid newspaper, Bild, joined this outrage by drawing up an itemised invoice for €149bn (£130b).
The list includes a €27 billion charge for lost tourism revenue, up to €7.2 billion for the German film industry, a million euros an hour for German airline Lufthansa and €50 billion for German small businesses.
Bild calculated that this amounts to €1,784 (£1,550) per person if Germany’s GDP falls by 4.2 percent, under the title “What China owes us.”
China responded by claiming the invoice “stirs up xenophobia and nationalism”.
Bild Editor-in-Chief Julian Reichelt rebutted the criticism, saying: “We asked in our newspaper Bild whether China should pay for the massive economic damage the coronavirus is inflicting worldwide.
“Xi Jinping, your government and your scientists had to know long ago that coronavirus is highly infectious, but you left the world in the dark about it.
Your top experts didn’t respond when Western researchers asked to know what was going on in Wuhan.
“You were too proud and too nationalistic to tell the truth, which you felt was a national disgrace.” (Vanguard)

Only the Mad People Accepts Loan From China - Tanzanian President
Tanzanian President rejects Chinese deal says Chinese loans can only be accepted by mad people.
Tanzania’s Dr John Magufuli is set to renegotiate a deal his country made with a Chinese Company to build a port in one of his many seashores as he said the deal settled for in 2013 is equivalent to selling their country to China.
According to Hit In Juba, the Tanzanian govt had signed a deal with China Merchants Holdings International, China’s which meant the Chinese would build a port in Bagamoyo and a special economic zone to transform the country into a regional trade and transport hub.
Tanzanian Parliament in May 2019 was now questioning Magufuli’s stance as the groundbreaking that was supposed to happen 4 years ago but is yet to take place.
Magufuli explained his decision to halt the project temporarily by saying:
Those investors are coming with tough conditions that can only be accepted by mad people. The investor told us once they build the port, there should be no any other port to be constructed all the way from Tanga to Mtwara south.

CORONAVIRUS: Two Coronavirus Vaccine Approved for Human Trial
China has approved early-stage human tests for two experimental coronavirus vaccines as it battles to contain imported cases and prevent a second wave of COVID-19.
The experimental vaccines are being developed by a Beijing-based unit of Sinovac Biotech and by the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products, an affiliate of state-owned China National Pharmaceutical Group, state news agency Xinhua reported on Tuesday.
Al Jazeera’s Sarah Clarke, reporting from Hong Kong, said China’s National Health Commission also confirmed the trials will go ahead.
In March, Beijing gave the green light to another clinical trial for a coronavirus vaccine candidate developed by the military-backed Academy of Military Medical Sciences and biotech firm CanSino Bio, shortly after US drug developer Moderna said it had begun human tests for their vaccine with the US National Institutes of Health.
“We can confirm now that three particular vaccines are being tested in China, and the National Health Commission has said it will have to clear a number of conditions before they can enable mass production of the vaccines globally,” said Clarke.
As of Tuesday, China reported 82,249 coronavirus cases and 3,341 deaths. There were no fatalities over the past 24 hours.

REVEALED: CHINA BANS ONLINE PREACHING AMIDST PANDEMIC
Online preaching banned in China, even during the COVID 19 pandemic, despite this many Christians have continued to share their faith.
Around the globe, the internet has become the principal way for Christians to keep in touch and also conduct prayer services during the coronavirus lock-down, but such an action remains illegal in China.
This is according to Release International, a non-profit organization which serves the persecuted church around the world.
Release International reported on 7 April 2020 that Chinese officials in Shandong Province banned online preaching despite the coronavirus pandemic, and that a state-aided campaign aimed at demolishing churches and tearing down crosses is ongoing nationwide.
“Officials have called for the ‘complete eradication’ of fellowships that avoid coming under state control, the organisation said.
Adding, “Government officials have been inspecting homes to remove religious symbols, and China has also stepped up its campaign against churches that meet in private rather than submit to state control.”
The watchdog Bitter Winter reported April 5 that very few organizations, and “only those that hold state-issued licenses,” can stream religious services online in China.
“We can’t get together because of the pandemic,” an underground house church pastor in the province of Jiangxi told Bitter Winter.
Release International said a pastor was detained for sharing a post on social media about the virus, and a Christian, Sun Feng, was seized by state security officers after asking friends to pray and fast during the outbreak.
The pastor tried to stream a sermon Feb. 9 through an app, but was stopped, according to Christianheadlines.com.
“Our first and only online gathering was blocked by the government soon after it started,” the preacher was quoted as saying.
A 2018 Chinese law bans Church streaming services.
“No organizations or individuals will be allowed to live-stream or broadcast religious activities, including praying, burning incense, ordinations, scripture chanting, holding Mass, worshipping or receiving baptism online in the form of text, photo, audio or video,” the law says.
Churches in China must register with the government and join either the Three-Self Patriotic Movement or the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association. But because these state-approved churches face severe restrictions, millions of Christians worship in illegal underground churches.
Earlier, Uganda Christian News reported that Christians in China are risking their lives to share the gospel as they distribute medical supplies in various provinces including Wuhan, where the coronavirus pandemic originated.
